IELTS Writing Task 1: Describe Charts, Maps, and Processes Clearly

How to structure Academic Task 1 responses, choose vocabulary for trends, and avoid the overview mistakes that cap your score.

Updated

Start with the overview, not the details

Examiners look for a clear overview in Task 1 before granular data points. Write two sentences that capture the main trend or comparison, then support with figures in body paragraphs.

If you list numbers without a story, coherence drops even when grammar is clean.

Language for trends without repetition

Rotate precise verbs and adverbs instead of repeating “increase” and “decrease”:

  • rose sharply, climbed gradually, plateaued, dipped slightly
  • twice as high as, accounted for the largest share
  • remained stable throughout the period

Practice with feedback loops

Task 1 rewards consistency. Analyze two responses per week and track whether your overview sentence actually matches the graphic.

Proselift helps you spot vague overview language and repeated chart vocabulary across drafts.
